NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Community members are invited to gather for an afternoon of music, remembrance and healing during the Mental Wellness in the Aftermath Tribute Concert on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at Edgewood Park in New Haven.
Dr. Yvonne McCoy joined “The Jose Candelario Show” to discuss the inspiration behind the event and its mission to support families and individuals who continue to experience the emotional effects of tragedy, violence and the loss of loved ones.
The idea for the concert began with McCoy’s husband, who wanted to honor an aunt and cousins who were lost during the tragedy remembered as the Elm City massacre.
Rather than focusing only on how their lives ended, the family wanted to create an event that celebrates how they lived while offering support to people who are still processing grief and trauma.
“We don’t want to just think of their death,” McCoy said. “We want to think of the life and those who are still here.”
McCoy explained that the emotional impact of violence can continue for years and even generations. Families are often expected to move forward without receiving the counseling, information or community support they need.
The concert is designed to help change that.
In addition to live musical performances, attendees will be able to connect with organizations and resources that can help individuals seeking mental health and wellness services.
“If you don’t know where to go, you may get some of that information at our concert,” McCoy said.
Breaking the Silence Around Mental Health
McCoy also emphasized the importance of discussing mental wellness among children, young adults and men.
Children who experience loss are often described as resilient, but that does not mean they are unaffected. Men and young men may also feel pressured to remain strong, avoid crying or keep their emotional struggles private.
“We teach our men to be strong,” McCoy said. “But sometimes they need that help, and we want to make sure they know where to go to get it.”
The event will create a welcoming space where conversations about grief, trauma and emotional wellness can take place without judgment.
Healing Through Music
Music will be at the heart of the tribute concert.
During the interview, McCoy and host Jose Candelario discussed how music can bring people back to positive memories, meaningful relationships and important moments in their lives.
“Music heals,” Candelario said. “It has always been the soundtrack to our lives.”
The concert is expected to include several performers, community musicians and a choir. Music Haven is also scheduled to participate.
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the afternoon in Edgewood Park.
Vendors and Community Organizations Invited
Organizers are also seeking approved food vendors and community organizations interested in participating.
Food vendors must meet New Haven health and permitting requirements. Mental health providers, wellness organizations and community resource groups are encouraged to become involved and share information with attendees.
“This is not only a concert, but a resource center,” Candelario said. “It is happening in a park right in the heart of the city and the heart of our community.”
