Victor Wembanyama did not just show up for Game 1.
He took over.
The San Antonio Spurs opened the Western Conference Finals with a statement win, beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in double overtime and stealing home-court advantage in one of the most dramatic playoff games of the year.
Wembanyama delivered the kind of performance that makes people stop debating potential and start talking about arrival. The Spurs star finished with 41 points, 24 rebounds and three blocks while playing nearly 49 minutes. In the biggest moment of the night, he drilled a deep 3-pointer near the end of the first overtime to keep San Antonio alive.
For Oklahoma City, the loss was especially painful. The Thunder had chances to protect home court, but San Antonio kept answering. Alex Caruso gave OKC a huge lift with 31 points, including eight 3-pointers, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 24 points, 12 assists and five steals. But the Thunder could not finish the job in the second overtime.
The Spurs were also playing without De’Aaron Fox, making the win even more impressive. San Antonio leaned on Wembanyama’s dominance, timely defense and clutch late-game execution to take a 1-0 series lead.
This was more than a road win.
It was a warning.
The Spurs walked into Oklahoma City, survived a double-overtime fight and left with control of the series. And if Game 1 was any indication, Wembanyama may not just be the future of the NBA.
He may be the problem everyone has to solve right now.
